Type: Personal Project for my Dad’s Record Store

Role: UX Designer and Researcher

Legend Records Record Buying App

The Problem

Since its establishment in 2017, my father's record business has experienced steady growth and maintained a loyal customer base. However, we have recognized a potential gap within his customer demographic, as well as an opportunity to expand the business further. Through thorough customer and internal research, we have identified the need to develop our own record-buying app, catering to both delivery and pick-up customers. Legend Records currently has no online platform or app, with my father relying primarily on a Facebook page for communication and limited online sales.

Project Parameters:

  • The app would be built using Figma.

  • Delivery and pickup options are available for customers.

  • Identify how many records are in stock.

  • Media page that keeps customers up to date on store hours and records newly in stock.

The Goal

The Legend Records Record Buying App will provide users with a platform that gives them an engaging platform to buy records and connect with their community.

User Research

  • Conduct user research by analyzing reviews and Facebook posts related to Legend Records.

  • The primary user group identified as working adults passionate about music and record collecting.

  • Tailor the app to effectively meet customer needs and provide an exceptional user experience.

The Idea

  • Foster a community of individuals with a shared passion for records and music.

  • Develop a mobile app to reach a wider audience that was previously inaccessible.

  • Engage with a new customer base while enhancing the user experience for existing patrons.

  • Provide real-time information on available stock through the app.

  • Empower customers to browse and make purchases outside of store hours.

User Pain Points

Digital Wireframes and Low-Fidelity Prototype

Next, I evaluated the low-fidelity prototype with users and identified the following key points

What worked:

  • App experience is familiar to users: Users were pleased that the app was consistent with the experiences they have on other mobile applications.

  • Minimum number of screens: Users were happy that the app had all the screens needed to efficiently place an order.

  • Order preview: Users enjoyed that they could preview the record they are buying and access all the important record details.

What could be better:

  • Unclear if an item has been added to bag: Multiple users were unsure if an item was added to their bag when completing the order process. Users want to see that an item has appeared in their bag.

  • Media page ordering: Users want an option on the media page for pickup orders rather than having delivery-only functionality.

Usability Study

High-Fidelity Prototype

The final prototype incorporated quality-of-life updates to improve user-friendliness and enhance features from the low-fidelity versions. By incorporating valuable feedback, I was able to create a unique user experience specific to Legend Records. The app now provides customers with a platform to easily engage with and access their record-buying needs, regardless of their geographical location.

Moving Forward

The Legend Records app I designed for my father's record store business aims to enhance the existing customer experience while introducing new users to the world of Legend Records. While the app is not yet fully functional, I am committed to learning coding skills to bring this project to life. By transforming my design into a functional app, both my father and his customers will benefit from the user experience we have crafted.
